Shelly grid meter

A meter, not an inverter. If your inverter reports production only, a Shelly at your supply point adds the grid reading that surplus charging needs. It works with any inverter and costs well under a hundred euros.

Do you need one?

Only if your inverter cannot see household consumption — usually Fronius without a Smart Meter, SolarEdge without a consumption meter, and Growatt. Connect your inverter first: if it reports production only, Sunplug shows a grid meter section.

Fitting it

The clamp goes around the live conductor at your supply point, inside the consumer unit. That is electrician work in most countries, and never on a live board. This guide covers a meter that is already fitted.

Connecting

  1. Find the Shelly's address in the Shelly app, or let Sunplug Agent discover it
  2. Settings → Equipment → grid meter → Shelly energy meter
  3. Enter the address
  4. If you locked the Shelly with a device password (Gen2 and later), enter it — the meter answers nobody without it. There is no user name: the device always uses admin. Leave it blank otherwise
  5. Check it works — import or export should match reality

If the direction is wrong

If export shows as import, switch the clamp direction to "reversed" — no rewiring needed. Quick test: on a sunny afternoon with the cars unplugged, you should be exporting.

When it does not work

Cannot reach it

Give the Shelly a fixed address on your router; otherwise it can move.

Readings are wrong

Half what they should be: on a three-phase supply, a single-phase meter measures one leg. A 3EM measures all three. Always zero: the clamp is not closed around the conductor, or is around the whole cable rather than one phase.
