SolarEdge

Read SolarEdge locally with the Sunplug Agent, or through SolarEdge's cloud with nothing at home.

With the Sunplug Agent

Every 30 seconds, day and night, over Modbus: production, battery power and charge level, and the grid when a SolarEdge meter is fitted at the supply point. No account; nothing leaves the house.

  1. Enable Modbus TCP on the inverter. It is off from the factory. Your installer can do it in SetApp under Site Communication, or you can do it yourself in two minutes, as shown below.
  2. Set up the Sunplug Agent at home, on the same network as the inverter
  3. The agent finds the inverter itself on port 1502 — you do not need its address
  4. In Settings → Equipment, pick the inverter the agent found

No installer access? Enable Modbus TCP yourself

SetApp is an installer tool, but the inverter has its own settings page that needs no account.

  1. On the inverter, move the red ON/OFF/P switch to P for about 2 seconds, then let go. This starts the inverter's own Wi-Fi. Do not hold it for 5 seconds or more: that starts optimizer pairing instead.
  2. Join that Wi-Fi from a phone or laptop. The network name and password are on the label on the side of the inverter.
  3. Open http://172.16.0.1 in a browser, go to Site Communication, and enable Modbus TCP. Leave the port at 1502.

Change nothing else on that page. Then reconnect to your home Wi-Fi.

Many SolarEdge installs have no meter at the supply point. Without one the agent sees production but not surplus: add a Shelly meter, or use the cloud connection, which reports house load without a meter.

Through the SolarEdge cloud

Nothing at home. Every fifteen minutes while a car can use the sun, with house load whether or not a meter is fitted. You sign in on SolarEdge's page; no password passes through Sunplug.

Your SolarEdge account needs a site on it before you start. If your installer set the system up under their own account, ask them to share it to yours first.

  1. Settings → Home location → Use my location, or type it. A town is enough
  2. Settings → Equipment → inverter → SolarEdge
  3. Press connect and sign in on SolarEdge's page with your SolarEdge account
  4. Choose the site and grant data access
  5. Press Agree. SolarEdge returns you to the app, connected, and the first reading is taken straight away

The connection is read-only and can be withdrawn from SolarEdge. While the agent is sending readings, the cloud is not read, and switching loses no history.

What the cloud connection does through the day

Sunplug reads every fifteen minutes while a car at home has room to charge and there is spare sun. Otherwise the dashboard shows one of these states.

Not enough sun to charge

Not enough sun to charge right now. Sunplug is checking SolarEdge every 15 min, so this is a snapshot from 14:20, not live.

When a reading shows too little spare power to start a car, the next comes after fifteen minutes, then thirty, and stays at thirty until the roof picks up. A climbing roof — dawn, or clouds thinning — is checked again after fifteen. The energy flows show the last reading and its age.

Nothing to charge

Nothing to charge — taking a break from SolarEdge.

Plug in a car or raise a target and Sunplug gets straight back to work.

No car is plugged in at home, or every car that is has reached its target, is away or is paused. Sunplug takes no readings until a car plugs in, a target is raised or a boost ends, then reads at once.

Night

Off to sleep for the night. Back at first light, around 07:11.

The roof is not read from evening until the sun is a few degrees above the horizon at your home location. The card shows tomorrow's wake-up time.

Set your home location so Sunplug knows when the sun rises — SolarEdge isn't being read until then.Set home location

The cloud is not read until you set it in Settings; reading then starts within the minute. The connect button asks for it first. The agent route does not need it.

When it does not work

The approval page will not let you finish

Almost always an account with no site on it. Add the site in SolarEdge's portal, or have your installer share theirs to your account, and start again.

The dashboard says the roof is not being read

If a car is plugged in but the card says nothing to charge, check in Settings that the car is at home and below its solar target.

Sunplug asks you to approve again

The permission renews itself while used, but lapses if unused long enough or withdrawn from SolarEdge. Reconnect: Settings → Equipment → SolarEdge → connect.

The agent cannot find the inverter

Modbus TCP is off by default: check SetApp, or ask your installer. The agent must be on the same network as the inverter. You can switch it on yourself, as shown above.

A factory reset switches Modbus off again. If the inverter goes quiet after a service visit, check that first.

The agent cannot read an inverter your own tools can

Update the agent. Versions before 0.2.49 opened a new connection for every block of registers, and a SolarEdge refuses a new connection for a moment after the last one closes. The agent found the inverter, then failed with "no SunSpec magic at any known base", "connection refused" or a timeout, while a script or Home Assistant read it without trouble. From 0.2.49, a reading is one connection.

Readings stop while another tool reads the inverter

A SolarEdge serves one Modbus TCP connection at a time. While a home automation system, monitoring app or Modbus scanner holds it, the agent's reads are refused or time out. Stop the other tool, or point it at Sunplug's data instead; readings return within a minute. The unit ID is not the problem: SolarEdge answers on unit ID 1; other IDs are follower inverters and meters.

The battery is not showing

Very old firmware may lack the battery registers. Everything else keeps working; Sunplug treats the house as having no battery.
