Any OCPP charger

Sunplug sets the charging rate at the socket of an OCPP wallbox, so it works with any car — including ones whose manufacturer has no API.

Read this first

A charger talks to one service at a time. Pointing it at Sunplug stops its manufacturer's app, scheduling, load balancing and access control — unless Sunplug passes everything through to them. Read that before changing the address: you will need the old one.

Turn off any solar or eco mode in the charger's own app. Two systems setting the same rate fight, and the more restrictive one wins.

Connecting

  1. In Sunplug: Settings → Equipment → Chargers → Add a wallbox
  2. Copy the two strings it shows: a server address and an identity.
  3. In your charger's own app, find its OCPP settings and paste both in.
  4. Save. Most chargers restart, and appear in Sunplug a minute or two later.
  5. On the connected charger, choose Use for a car, pick a slot and name the car. Only then does Sunplug manage its charging.

Use the generated identity as is: it links the charger to your account.

If it will not connect

If nothing appears a few minutes after using the encrypted address, use the unencrypted one behind the "my charger will not connect" button. Many wallboxes lack the certificates encryption needs; only the charging rate crosses that link.

Setting up your car

With no state of charge, percentage targets such as "charge to 80%" do not apply. Surplus tracking, schedules, boost and blockout windows do.

Set the charger to start charging on its own — "free charging", "autostart" or an RFID tag swipe, depending on the brand. Sunplug then varies the rate.

The 6 A floor

The minimum is 6 A per phase, about 1.4 kW on single phase; below that, Sunplug pauses. It waits several minutes before stopping and longer before restarting, to spare the charger's contactor.

When it does not work

The charger never appears

Check the address for a trailing slash or stray space, and that the identity matches exactly, including case.

It appears, but the rate never changes

The charger supports on-off but not smart charging. Sunplug detects and reports this on connection: the charger can be switched with the sun but not modulated.

It connects and then drops out

Usually an idle timeout. Sunplug asks every charger for a keepalive, which fixes most cases. Report persistent drops.

It charges at full rate regardless

Some firmware acknowledges a limit it does not apply. The equipment page shows the rate the charger reports offering.
