Sunplug reads SMA on your own network through the Sunplug Agent, over SunSpec Modbus. No account, no cloud.

An SMA needs a meter beside it

SMA's Modbus profile has no meter model, so an SMA reports production but not house load. Add a Shelly at your supply point (well under a hundred euros); without one, Sunplug says it cannot see your consumption.

Which SMA inverters

Current Sunny Boy, Sunny Tripower and Sunny Boy Storage (Speedwire, SunSpec Modbus). Older webconnect generations are not covered; an interface with no Modbus section is likely one of them.

Setting it up

  1. In the inverter's installation assistant, under Network configuration → Modbus, switch the TCP server on. Leave the port at 502
  2. Install the Sunplug Agent on an always-on device on the same network as the inverter
  3. The agent finds the inverter and identifies it as an SMA
  4. Add a Shelly meter at your supply point

A factory reset switches Modbus off again. If a working inverter goes quiet after a service visit or a reset, check this first.

When it does not work

The agent finds nothing

Modbus is off from the factory. Check the installation assistant, and that the agent is on the inverter's network.

A guide told me the unit id is 3

The SunSpec unit id is 126: SMA adds 123 to the SMA-Modbus id, whose default is 3. Unit 3 does not answer SunSpec, which looks like Modbus being off. Sunplug asks 126, so there is nothing to change.

Production shows but consumption does not

Expected: SMA publishes no meter. Add a Shelly.
